Effects of Host Plants on the Population Parameters of Bemisia argentifolii (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae)

ABSTRACT

Silverleaf whitefly (SLWF), Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring, fed on cauliflower and cucumber, were evaluated the developmental duration, longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of progeny. Completed immature durations were in 16.75 and 18.62 days which fed on cauliflower and cucumber, respectively. Adult females lived an average of 15.64 days (on cauliflower) and 21.42 days (on cucumber). Females laid 91.80 and 135.71 eggs (with a rate of 6.58 and 5.33 eggs/female/day) on cauliflower and cucumber, respectively. The offspring sex ratio of the SLWF favored the female 0.81 and 0.67 which fed on the two host plants. The SLWF population increased 91.80-fold in a mean generation time of 24.39 days with an intrinsic rate of increasing of 0.1853 eggs/female/day on cauliflower, and increased 116.44-fold in a mean generation time of 28.70 days with an intrinsic rate of increasing of 0.1657 eggs/female/day on cucumber. We suggested that host plants affected the development, longevity, fecundity, sex ratio and population parameters of SLWF significantly, and the biological characterization of SLWF connect with the adaptation of the whiteflies on its host plants.

Key words: host plants, Bemisia argentifolii, development, fecundity, population parameters.
