The Breeding of Taichung Sen No. 16

Summary

　　Taichung Sen No. 16 is a indica type of rice developed by crossing Taichung Sen Shih 204 (female parent) with the F3 of IR 26 x gangala (male parent). It was negisted and neleased in the 2nd crop of 1981. The main agronomic characteristics of this variety is its indica characters, erecleaves somi-dwarf plant type, stiff culm and high response to nitrogon fertilizer. Additionally, its rice grain is meiumd in length. It is 7 day shorter than Taichung Sen No. 3 in growing period. The yield performance of this variety is high, especially in the 2nd crop. It was the same as Taichung Sen No. 10 in the advanced yield trial As compared with Taichung Sen No. 3 it was same in the 1st crop and 12.6% higher in the 2nd crop. This variety has a good eating quality. It's stickiness is better than Taichung Sen No. 3 and No. 10 Moreover, the volume weight of the variety is 540 - 550 kg/liter which is about th same as that of Japonica rice and higher than those of the most comomon indica varieties This value is higher than the standard of Food Bureau. This variety is resistant to leaf blast panicle blast and brown planthopper. The cold tolerance of this variety is better than Taichung Sen No. 3 and No. 10, so that it is suitable for planting by transplanter.
