2. Improvement of cultivation technology

A. Lighting Technology

a. Chrysanthemum LED Night-Break Lighting

Utilizing LED or energy-efficient light bulbs as night-break lighting commonly used in households for chrysanthemum, it is possible to save over 60% in chrysanthemum photoperiod electricity costs. This results in a cost savings of approximately NT$25,000 per hectare per season. The use of 10W red LED intermittent photoperiod for 15 minutes shows a more effective inhibition of chrysanthemum bud differentiation compared to continuous photoperiod with a 23W energy-saving light bulb.

b. Intelligent Light Technology for Oncidium Orchids

  • Bud Removal Combined with Light Adjustment Technology for Oncidium Orchid Production: Pruning buds at the appropriate time, coupled with high-pressure sodium lamp illumination, enhances the quality and adjusts the production period of Oncidium orchids during the winter cut flower season.

  • Intelligent LED Lighting Technology to Improve the Quality of Oncidium Cut Flowers: Development of greenhouse supplemental lighting and lighting technology controlled by field microclimate parameters. This technology reduces lighting hours by 50%, utilizes LEDs to replace energy-consuming high-pressure sodium lamps, achieving a total energy savings of 42-65%. The related technological developments are mature and have been successfully implemented in the industry, effectively increasing income for flower growers.

c. Intelligent electrophotography technology in lisianthus

  • In 2018, Lisianthus electrophotography technology was developed, which can solve the problem of flower bud elimination in autumn and winter and improve the quality of cut flowers.

  • In 2021, we cooperated with Industrial Research Institute and developed lisianthus LED intelligent lighting technology, which can save 35% of electricity during cultivation.

B. Lisianthus cultivation techniques:

  1. In 2013, the topping technique for lisianthus was developed, increasing the branching and the number of flowers, thereby enhancing the quality of the cut flowers.

  2. In 2016, a shading cultivation technique for lisianhus was developed, improving its summer cut flower quality.

  3. In 2021, a water-cultivation model incorporating microorganisms was developed for lisianthus, addressing issues related to continuous cropping and enhancing the quality of cut flowers.

C. Nobile Dendrobium Cultivation Techniques

  1. In 2015, we developed a promote flowering technology by change altitude of nobile dendrobium. Mature plants are moved to mid-altitude greenhouses in autumn for cool-temperature flowering. The flowering period can be advanced to the new year.

  2. In 2017, a nobile dendrobium cultivation technology was developed. It only takes one year from tissue-culture seedlings to potted flowers. It has the advantages of time saving, high efficiency and high quality.

  3. In 2020, a refrigerated flowering promotion technology for nobile dendrobium was developed. Mature plants can be refrigerated to promote flowering in August, and the flowering period can be advanced to December for the Christmas marketing.

  4. Develop spring Dendrobium orchid simulated storage and transportation technology in 2021. Mature plants are treated by Phalaenopsis shipping conditions, and can be given electricity or moisture to overcome the problem of defoliation after storage and transportation.

D. Post-Harvest Treatment Technology Development

  1. Research and Development Preservatives: Developed preservatives for lisianthus and lily cut flowers, significantly improving the ornamental quality of the cut flowers. The flower buds can open normally and exhibit vibrant colors, and issues such as wilting, dehydration of leaves, and drooping necks are less likely to occur. Additionally, the flowers maintain their freshness and individual flower longevity is increased, extending the overall vase life by more than twice.

  2. Chrysanthemum Dyeing Technology Development: Applied dyeing techniques to standard-type chrysanthemum cut flowers, creating more colorful cut flower products that are complimented by consumers and enhancing competitiveness in the floral market.

E. Development the technology and product of horticulture therapy

In response to social needs, we have been investing in the research and promotion of horticultural therapy since 2004. In the past 10 years, with the aging society problem, related therapy research has shifted to establishing demonstration sites, developing professional activity plans, and establishing health benefit assessment and impact spread and promote, and explore various product development and industrialization models to gradually support the development of the horticultural therapy industry.

3. Facilities

  1. Orchid Experimental Greenhouse: Built in 2014, it covers an area of 900 square meters. It is a steel-frame reinforced structure greenhouse. The hardware structure is consistent with the greenhouses exported to the United States. It provides breeding and cultivation experiments of orchid plants such as dendrobium.

  2. Flower structural greenhouse: In order to strengthen the needs for related cultivation experiments and research, a Liba-type greenhouse with an area of 660 square meters was built in 2021. It is currently used for chrysanthemum certification, rose organic cultivation and Malabar chestnut cultivation system research.
