Upland and Special Crop Research

  1. Breeding on Job’s tears and Buckwheat

In order to stabilize the yield of Job’s tears, we reduce the plant height to make the mature period consistent, and reduce the shredding when harvest. Now we has breed three dwarf fine strains. To enhance the competitiveness of buckwheat in Taiwan, we use mass selection method to select red-purple color of ordinary buckwheat strains, and then will continuous purification and yield testing.

  2. Breeding on groundnut

Groundnut seeds in Taiwan usually saved by farmers themselves or supply from sellers', that resulted in mixed seeds and unpurity issues, and affecting yield and quality. In order to selection and purification of local groundnut, the goal of breeding with characteristics such as small seeds and stable yield, and grow well in the central Taiwan.

  3. Breeding on waxy sorghum

The sorghum breeding program for wine making and characteristics for the waxy starch from 2012, we processed sorghum pure line breeding from using waxy sorghum hybrids. After many years self-purification and field selection, we had bred three waxy pure lines.

  4. Breeding of wheat

In order to breed various kinds of wheat varieties for different processing purposes. We introduced 1200 lines from International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center for pure line selection . Based on adaptability, quality and yield selected superior lines. We selected 10 superior lines of wheat with different gluten content by different sowing times, emergence and tillering stage waterlogging test. At present, we continue evaluating suitable for the production of these lines and safe production and reproduction technology.

  5. Regional trials and Breeding of soybean varieties in central Taiwan

The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate growth characters and yield of soybean variety 'Tainan 3'(TN3), 'Tainan 5'(TN5), 'Kaohsiung Select 10'(KSS10) and 'Shih-Shin' in the ratoon rice field of central Taiwan Area. The results showed that Soybean of the 2nd crops were the best quality, the average yield were 1,974 ~ 4,014 kg/ha in experiment plots. We will study on relationship between yield traits with fertility and growth environmental factors (temperature, light, weeds and pest control, etc.).
