Local Agricultural Industry in Taichung District

The Taichung district, which includes Taichung, Changhua, and Nantou County as well as Taichung City, has a total area of 738,700 hectares, of which 162,984 hectares are crop lands. The ratio of paddy field to upland field is approximately6:4. However, this ratio is changing yearly because of the recent government policy to increase the acreage of upland crops and to reduce the acreage of paddy field.

The mild and favorable climate of this district is suitable for growing a large number of crops the year round. A great diversity of crops and highly intensive utilization of the land is characteristic of agriculture in this district. The mean annual temperature is 23.4 ℃ . July are the hottest months with a mean temperature of 29 ℃ , while January is the coldest month with a mean temperature of 16.2 ℃ . The total annual radiation is around 6338.5MJ/m2. The mean annual precipitation in the past ten years was1,416.5 mm. The distribution of rainfall is rather uneven within a year, i.e., summer is the wet season, and winter is the dry season.

There are five major groups of soils in this district. Slate alluvial soil covers the whole Changhua Prefecture where rice yield is the highest in the district. Sandstone and shale alluvial soils are found mostly in Taichung and Nantou Prefectures. Soil reaction in these areas ranges from slightly acid to strongly acid. Hence, the yield of rice is usually lower than that in Changhua County. Lateritic soil which is strongly acidic and low in fertility is scattered in the highland areas. Mixed alluvial soils of sandstone, shale and slate are found in the west coast of Taichung County. Because of its high sulfur content and poor drainage properties, rice yield in these soils is generally low. Yellow podzolic soil is generally found in the mountainous areas.

The total population working for agriculture in Taichung, Changhua and Nantou County is about 652,436. The major crops grown in this district are included wth paddy rice, wheat, buckwheat, job’s tears and peanut, fruit trees of grapevine, Japanese apricot, peach, apple, plum, Longan. guava, citrus, Litchi, pitaya, pomelo, persimmon etc..), vegetable (cabbage, Chinese cabbage, Cauliflower, tomato, sweet pepper, cucumber, watermelon, water bamboo, bamboo shoot etc..) and flowers(Oncidium, Cymbidium , Anthurium, Eustoma, Chrysanthemums, Lilium, Gerbera and Rosaetc.. ).
