一、Crop Seedling Production Industry

The crops which rely on seedling cultivation are rice, vegetable and fruit trees, especially, there are the advanced mechanization in rice and vegetables seedling industries. Cultivated area of rice in central Taiwan accounts for 30% of domestic cultivation. Seedling is the first and significant part of mechanization, in order to establish technology and system, the Rice Seedling Nursery centers had been set up during 1970s to centralize management and adopt mechanized production from seed treatment to nursery management. And, fostering a large quantity of healthy seedlings is a crucial fundamental for mechanization of transplanting. Nowadays, seedling cultivation for rice is highly mechanized.

Plug seedling production for vegetables has advantages of automation, standardization, uniformity saving seeds, easy transportation and high survival rates. This mainly adopts to Cruciferae (cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower), Cucurbitaceae (watermelon, cantaloupe, bitter gourd, cucumber), and Solanaceae (tomato, bell pepper) which are transplanted after seedling. With the advancement of information technology, digitalization and automation has been integrated with seedling production management to record the data systematically, keep the data complete and reduce labors.

Grafting seedling is another common method for seedling production, which scion is grafted onto a vigorous rootstock to improve both the yield and quality of crops. Grafted seedlings need specific environment for healing and growth, and the device for healing can provide controlled and stable conditions so as to enhance survival rate, uniformity of growth and quality. The crops that cultivated with grafted seedlings are commonly pears, passion fruits, tomatoes etc. Presently, manual grafting remains the primary approach, but there are machines which can assist manual grafting to alleviate workload.
